French unemployment hits 13-year high

With many recent layoffs in the manufacturing sector, job seekers are struggling to find work [GALLO/GETTY]
The number of unemployed people in France has broken past the three million barrier for the first time since 1999, the country's leaders say.
The latest total adds pressure on President Francois Hollande, whose administration is under attack four months after taking power for not doing enough to fix the economy. France's unemployment rate is currently 10 per cent.
Breaking the three million mark carries more symbolic importance than economic significance, but the news was covered extensively in the French media over the weekend. The employment ministry says the three million threshold was crossed in 1996 and again in 1999.
Michel Sapin, the country's employment minister, confirmed the total on French radio on Sunday and warned that the numbers would likely get worse.
Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault called the numbers "very violent". The government announced last week that it had counted more than 2.9 million unemployed people in July, so the threshold was expected to be passed in August.

Gambian Artist, John Kwesi Sign to 50 Cent's Hitlab

A Gambian-born artist based in Vienna, Austria, was recently signed by the world's RnB rap mogul-50 Cent, under one his labels -G-NOTES RECORDS, if reports reaching What's On is anything to go by. John Kwesi, widely known by his music sobriquet Deejay Limbo, is a Gambian born to a Ghanaian father and a Gambian mother. He was raised in Latri Kunda German neighbourhood before he moved to Austria.

G- Notes records was created by 50 cent in 2010 for non-hip hop artists and it came after the success of former G-Unit subsidiary label -'G-Unit South' and 'G-Unit Philly', then 50 Cent decided to create another subsidiary in 2009. Unlike the two other subsidiary labels, 'G-Note Records' is a hip hop based label including Pop, Dance and R&B music. The label was founded in late 2010 with the first two artists signed, namely-Governor and Hot Rod. The first official music that was released under the label was that of 'Hot Rod's first single called 'Dance With Me'.
Since then with increased formidable emerging stars in the entertainment world, it believed that 50 Cent intended to sign more acts to the label in the upcoming year, including R&B singer Jovan Dais, who was featured on the original version of his single 'Baby By Me', Zimbabwean singer -Gamu Nhengu, and singer Jeremih, who he has recently worked on a couple of projects with. The second single released on the label was Governor's, the song was called 'Here We Go Again' and featured 50 Cent himself.

According to the label official site, 50 Cent in an interview with G-Unit Radio 50 Cent, said he created the label because there was a gap in the market and taking into account the group G Unit has a distinctive aggressive style and so also everyone on the label's style was expected to be aggressive. So in essence it's also a platform for the artist to make all different style of music.

However, during an interview with What's On, Deejay Limbo as fondly called, disclosed that the whole move came to light after the label officials watched his videos on YouTube as well as listened to some of his songs on SoundCloud.

"Yea... after listening to one song of mine...they wrote me.. inviting me for an audition in London.. Then my manager replied with other songs of mine then they wrote back showing interest of signing me with no need of me going through audition.

"This is welcome news and I want to say a big thx to all my fans friends in Gambia , the radio stations and all the Dj's especially Enc. I dedicate this to my parents and the Gambia as a whole. My intention is to put the Gambia's on world map musically. Also special thanks to Hakim of Sunland Music," he said.

Angola's ruling party wins general election

Angolan President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos, flanked by his wife Ana Paula, casts his ballot [AFP]
Angola President Jose Eduardo dos Santos' nearly 33 years in power looks set to be extended after his ruling People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) party took 74.46 per cent of votes in national elections, according to provisional results
Julia Ferreira, an electoral commission spokeswoman, said on Saturday that with about 58 per cent of ballots counted, the MPLA had taken nearly three quarters of the ballots.

The provisional turnout was just over 57 percent, the commission said.
Dos Santos had been widely expected to win the election, which was constantly postponed until last year, when the government changed the constitution so that the leader of the party with the most votes becomes president.

Voters on Friday were electing politicians for the 220-seat parliament.
Pedro Verona Pires, chief of the African Union's observer team, described the organisation of the election as "satisfactory" compared to the country's previous election in 2008.
"Everyone agrees that the elections this year were better organised than in 2008," Pires, who is also the former president of Cape Verde, told the AFP news agency.
